Before Zola became a movie, it was a story that took over social media.
In October 2015, Detroit waitress and dancer A’Ziah “Zola” King shared the story of a Florida trip through a thread of 148 tweets. Her funny, shocking and detailed storytelling quickly went viral. The thread caught the attention of Missy Elliott, Solange Knowles, Ava DuVernay and thousands of readers who could not stop following along.
The movie stars Taylour Paige as Zola, a waitress and part-time stripper who meets Stefani, played by Riley Keough. After the two quickly connect, Stefani invites Zola on a road trip to Florida, promising they can make good money dancing for the weekend.
What sounds like a simple trip soon turns into something far more dangerous.
Zola finds herself surrounded by people she barely knows, including Stefani’s boyfriend and a controlling man with his own plans for the women. As the weekend grows more chaotic, Zola realizes that she must stay alert and find a way out of a situation she never agreed to join.
The film mixes crime, comedy and danger without losing the voice that made the original Twitter thread so popular. At times, the story is funny because of how unbelievable the characters behave. At other moments, it becomes a serious look at control, sex work and the risks women face when other people try to profit from their bodies.
Paige keeps Zola at the center of the story. Even when everything around her becomes wild, Zola watches carefully, thinks quickly and refuses to let anyone control her. Her reactions often say more than words, making her the calm voice inside a trip filled with bad decisions.
The real Zola admitted that some parts of her online story were made more dramatic, but people connected to the trip confirmed that many of the main events happened. Rolling Stone later interviewed those involved, helping the story travel from social media to the big screen.
Directed by Janicza Bravo, Zola shows how a young Black woman used her own voice to turn a frightening experience into a story the world wanted to hear. It is also a reminder that social media can do more than create a viral moment; it can introduce a new kind of storyteller to Hollywood.
