Busta Rhymes and Lil Wayne Link Up Over J Dilla Production on “Talk Ya Shit”

Busta Rhymes, J Dilla and Lil Wayne come together on “Talk Ya Shit,” a hip-hop record built around confident bars, punchlines and a laid-back but bouncy J Dilla beat. Released on August 13, the track brings Busta and Wayne together for a compact two-and-a-half-minute lyrical exchange. 

The record is driven by J Dilla’s production, with Busta Rhymes and Lil Wayne using the open pockets in the beat for their individual flows. Lyrically, “Talk Ya Shit” stays rooted in classic rap braggadocio, with money, status and success among the subjects running through the verses.

The collaboration also marks a notable connection between Lil Wayne and J Dilla. “Talk Ya Shit” was promoted as the first official release to feature Wayne rapping over a Dilla-produced beat, bringing Wayne’s punchline-heavy style into the late Detroit producer’s distinctive sound. 

For Busta Rhymes, the song is part of a much larger connection to Dilla. The two worked together during Dilla’s lifetime, and Busta has said the producer left him hundreds of beats before his death in 2006. That archive became the foundation for DILLAGENCE II, a continuation of Busta and Dilla’s 2007 Dillagence mixtape. 

“Talk Ya Shit” appears as track 17 on the 19-song DILLAGENCE II, which was released August 25. The project also includes appearances from D’Angelo, Big Sean, Anderson .Paak, Ludacris, Common, Talib Kweli, Jon Batiste, Honey Bxby and others, bringing a new group of artists into Busta and Dilla’s long-running musical connection.
